FAQ
When will _____ street be paved?
The Town of Edenton maintains a priority list of streets based on conditional assessment. We are planning to update that list over 2024 and into 2025 for future rounds of paving. In 2023, we oversaw the paving of 20+ streets. We anticipate a few more by the end of 2024.
Please keep in mind that some streets in town limits are NOT owned by the Town of Edenton and therefore are maintained by state crews. The main state-owned roads include Virginia Road, Broad Street (from the bypass to Queen Street), West Queen Street, East Church Street (and onto Poplar Neck Road), Granville Street, Coke Avenue, Dr. MLK Jr Avenue, Paradise Road, Peanut Drive, and a section of East Peterson Street leading up to Hicks Field.
The Town of Edenton works with NCDOT to coordinate the arrival of contractors for state roads, but these contractors are overseen and selected by NCDOT and operate on their own schedule, not the Town of Edenton's.
There is a pothole on my street, who can I call?
Call Public Works at (252) 482-4111. We try to address issues as quickly as possible given the resources we have available at the time. If the pothole is new and large, resembling a sinkhole, call us immediately or call dispatch after hours at (252) 482-4444.
Why do town streets get dug up?
Oftentimes, cuts are made into asphalt for utility repairs (water lines, water & sewer taps, etc). We try to minimize these cuts, but when repairs are needed, we will not ignore it. We try to have utility cuts patched as quickly as possible after work is completed. Utility companies and contractors may also be seen performing utility cuts on streets, if their services are damaged and need repairs (fiber, natural gas, etc).
There is sidewalk damage near my home, what should I do?
Call Public Works at (252) 482-4111. We will make note of the issue and address it as quickly as we can given our staff schedule and resources.
How can I request consideration for a new sidewalk extension in my neighborhood?
If your neighborhood or area of town does not currently have sidewalks, contact the Public Works Director or the Town Manager to request that administration consider an extension of our network to your area. We plan to expand some sidewalks to the far east side of town by the end of 2024.
Stormwater drains are getting backed up near my home or on my street and causing flooding. What can be done?
Remember to keep grass clippings and yard debris OFF of the street and OUT of storm drains. Yard debris can be picked up in piles at the edge of your property (or in the Town's right of way area). This debris can cause flooding, attract bacteria and pests, and harm our waterways. You can also garner a fine of up to $50 if you continue to break this rule.
Call Public Works at (252) 482-4111 if a drain is full or clogged, and we will have crews come out and clean the drain or catch basin to alleviate any backups. After hours, dispatch can be called at (252) 482-4444.
