The Electric Department is responsible for providing and maintaining the electric utilities for all Town of Edenton customers. It serves over 4,000 electric customers and covers an area of about 50 square miles in Edenton and Chowan County. Safety for our employees and service reliability are our top priorities.

We are one of over 70 Public Power Communities in North Carolina, which means that our employees are also your neighbors. Our goal is to provide timely response to all customer requests for electric services, power outages, outdoor lighting services, and special service requirements.

What is Public Power? ElectriCities explains it wonderfully

Edenton purchases its electricity from the North Carolina Eastern Municipal Power Association (NCEMPA), which receives power from several power plants throughout North Carolina. NCEMPA consists of 32 cities and towns in Eastern N.C., including Hertford, Elizabeth City, Washington, Greenville, New Bern, and Wilson. NCEMPA was formed in 1982 and provides wholesale power to its 32 participants.

When power arrives in town limits via substation, it is then distributed to transformers in neighborhoods and service areas. These transformers could be above ground on a pole, or on the ground in a green box you may see often. Please exercise extreme caution around transformers.

We recognize the importance of reliable electric service, and our goal is to always keep the lights on. However, there are many causes for power interruptions, such as vehicle accidents, animal contact, trees, severe weather conditions, and on rare occasions, equipment failure.

If you see wires of any kind on the ground, do not go near them. Overhead wires on utility poles can be electric, telephone, fiber/broadband, or cable TV. Call the Electric Department at (252) 482-4414 immediately and we will take appropriate action. If the wires are sparking either on the pole or on the ground, call 911.
