EDENTON – General Statute 143-215.1C requires that the owner or operator of any wastewater collection or treatment works to issue a press release when an untreated wastewater discharge of 1,000 gallons or more reaches surface waters. In accordance with the regulation, the following news release has been prepared and issued to media in the affected county (ies): 

The Town of Edenton had a discharge of untreated wastewater from our collection system on March 6, 2024 of an estimated 11,000 gallons for approximately 5 hours, due to heavy rainfall conditions over a prior 24 hour period. An estimated 3,000 gallons were discharged at the 700 block of North Granville Street, an estimated 6,750 gallons were discharged at the 100 block of Virginia Road, and an estimated 1,350 gallons were discharged at the 100 block of Morris Circle. 

The untreated wastewater was discharged into Filbert’s Creek tributaries to Edenton Bay. The North Carolina Division of Environmental Quality was notified on March 6, 2024 and is reviewing the matter.
